Amish White Bread

Preparation:

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water, then stir in the yeast. Allow the yeast to proof until it resembles a creamy foam.
  2. Mix salt and oil into the yeast mixture. Gradually mix in the flour, one cup at a time, until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a well-oiled bowl, turning it to coat all sides with oil. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and allow the dough to rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  5. Once the dough has doubled in size, punch it down and knead it for a few minutes. Then, divide the dough in half and shape each half into a loaf.
  6. Place the shaped loaves into two well-oiled 9×5 inch loaf pans. Allow the dough to rise for an additional 30 minutes, or until it has risen about 1 inch above the pans.
  7. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  8. Bake the loaves in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until they are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  9. Remove the loaves from the oven and let them cool on wire racks before slicing.

Enjoy!
