Amish White Bread
Preparation:
- In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water, then stir in the yeast. Allow the yeast to proof until it resembles a creamy foam.
- Mix salt and oil into the yeast mixture. Gradually mix in the flour, one cup at a time, until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a well-oiled bowl, turning it to coat all sides with oil. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and allow the dough to rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
- Once the dough has doubled in size, punch it down and knead it for a few minutes. Then, divide the dough in half and shape each half into a loaf.
- Place the shaped loaves into two well-oiled 9×5 inch loaf pans. Allow the dough to rise for an additional 30 minutes, or until it has risen about 1 inch above the pans.
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
- Bake the loaves in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until they are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Remove the loaves from the oven and let them cool on wire racks before slicing.
Enjoy!
