Garlic

Are you worried that it will sprout too quickly? So, remember that the ideal temperature for storing garlic is around 10°C. You can store it for up to 6 months in the cellar or in a well-ventilated place away from light. It is therefore necessary to pay attention to sudden changes in temperature which can accelerate germination. Unfortunately, it will no longer be usable at that time. To make the most of it for as long as possible, here are the best preservation methods.

  1. How do you store garlic in a jar?

Usually, to properly store fruit and vegetables, it is recommended to spread bubble wrap on the fridge drawer to prolong their freshness. But this technique is not enough for garlic. If you keep it in the refrigerator with other vegetables, it won’t stop it from sprouting. Keep in mind that it germinates faster if stored in a place that is too humid. And, on the other hand, if the environment is too dry, it starts to shrink and dry out. So, how to avoid this degradation process and preserve its unique aroma? There is no need to look for very sophisticated methods. The jar trick is great and simple to apply: take a small airtight glass jar and place rice in the bottom. Divide the garlic into several cloves and place them directly in the jar. And voilà, the rice will immediately avoid excess moisture: your garlic will stay fresh and aromatic longer.

  1. Adding vegetable oil

Another smart tip: Using a soft brush, you should apply a little oil to each head of garlic. For one liter of vegetable oil, count 20 to 25 drops of iodine. At first this operation will seem a little long, but you will quickly get used to it, don’t worry. And as soon as the garlic starts to dry, keep it in a ventilated room away from light and any heat source.

  1. Store garlic in linen bags

Have you ever thought about storing it in a laundry bag? This is an excellent initiative. If the humidity is very low in the room, you can sprinkle the heads of garlic with small onion peels. However, if the environment is too humid, add a saturated salt solution to the linen bag to absorb excess moisture. As an added bonus, it will protect your garlic from all types of pests and diseases.

  1. Store fresh garlic in vinegar

Many people prefer to marinate garlic. It is true that its taste is even more delicate and deliciously spicy! With the right technique, you can even store it for up to 4 months in the refrigerator. Peel the pods, removing all the peel well and slide them into a perfectly clean and dry glass jar. The secret: completely cover the garlic cloves with white vinegar (and add some spices if you like). Subsequently, you will see that your dishes will be seasoned with a special and exquisite flavor.
