Lemon in the refrigerator: why it has no place

Storing lemons in the refrigerator may seem like a good idea at first. However, they are only well preserved there in exceptional cases. We explain to you why this is the case and how you can better preserve lemons.

While vegetables like lettuce or broccoli store well in the refrigerator’s crisper drawer, you shouldn’t store lemons in the refrigerator. They belong to the citrus group and ripen at temperatures around 30 degrees.

Buying advice: Conventional lemons are often grown with chemical and synthetic pesticides, so favor organic products.

Even though lemons spoil more quickly at higher temperatures, you still shouldn’t store them in the refrigerator. And this has its reasons.

Why whole lemons shouldn’t go in the refrigerator

If you store whole lemons in the refrigerator, this can certainly allow the yellow citrus fruits to stay fresh for three to four weeks. However, then you won’t really have much fun with them: due to low temperatures, lemons lose their aroma when stored in the refrigerator. If you use them for baking, cooking or for lemon ginger water, the taste experience will be significantly reduced. Whole lemons therefore have no place in the refrigerator.
